“Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth.” (Colossians 3:1-2 NLT)
So often I’ve read this passage and thought of the literal things of heaven: pearly gates, streets of gold, the glory of Christ. As you continue to read the rest of the chapter it is clear to see that Paul is not writing about geography, but rather the perspective of our hearts and minds.
He teaches us here to think about the things of heaven, not the things of the earth. From the context we see that the things of the earth are the things that as believers in Jesus we are no longer slaves to. Things like sexual immorality, lust, greed, anger, wrath, malice, profanity, lying. We should put off those things and instead think on and put on the things of heaven. Things like love, thankfulness, joy, peace, mercy, compassion, and patience.
What are you seeking and setting your mind on? Seek Christ and the things of heaven. Set your mind on loving, forgiving, and sowing peace and joy into others today for the glory of our Lord Jesus.
