“And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:13-14 ESV)
As we approach Easter it is fitting that we think about the forgiveness of sins we have through Jesus’ death on the cross and the living hope we have through His resurrection from the dead.
It is amazing to me the love that God has for a rebel like me. I was dead in my sins. I was an enemy to God who deserved wrath for my sins against Him, yet He chose to love me and give me forgiveness and life with Christ.
This verse uses a financial debt as an image of the forgiveness we have received from our sins. Our sins pile up like a huge debt that can never be repaid. No amount of good works or sacrifice will ever bring our account balance to 0.
Without the grace of God we are spiritually bankrupt.
So Christ took that debt of sin and paid the wrath we deserve for it Himself on the cross. He died the death we deserve. Our certificate of sin debt was nailed to the cross.
Think about that amazing love today and praise the Lord Jesus for His great mercy and grace and love.
