How often do you pray for the Lord Jesus to come?
I venture to guess that it doesn’t cross our minds that often in the pampered and comfortable Christian Church in the west.
It was however the regular cry of the early church and I hear of this cry more often in the persecuted church in Communist and Islamic countries today. Countries where Christians are tortured and killed simply for loving and believing in Jesus.
“And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?” (Luke 18:7 ESV)
These believers cry to Jesus day and night. They long for Him and his presence with a feeling like a great homesickness in their souls.
It is no coincidence that the very last words of the Bible are first the words of the Lord:
He who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.”
And then the response of the church: “Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” (Revelation 22:20 ESV)
This is the cry that the whole Bible is meant to leave in the hearts of Christian people.
So if you find that you are not longing for the Lord Jesus to come, then ask yourself “Why not?” Perhaps you are so satisfied with the gifts of God that you no longer desire the Gift Giver.
